Tangles Be Gone!

My daughter has beautiful naturally curly hair that she hates.
Mainly because of the tangles and the hassle of keeping her from looking like a midget Carrot Top.
This little guy is amazing!  It's the only brush she will use.  Key word here is "USE".  She uses it and it was worth every penny!
Check out the Knot Genie... click on the image below:

How to Remove Labels from Containers

I have some of the coolest jars and plastic containers that I have upcycled into vases, tealight candle holders and storage for scrapbook stuff or husband's nails or screws or washers or whatever the heck he uses....

My favorite containers are the sample containers I get from Birchbox!!

The hardest part of using these containers is getting rid of the labels and the ridiculously sticky adhesive.  I've discovered a remedy to this and now all is right with the world.

Step One:

Spread 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil or Crisco over the entire label. Leave the oil on the label overnight, then lift the edges to determine if the label can be removed. If it is still attached, reapply vegetable oil and let it sit several hours before you test again to see if it can be removed.

Step Two:

Peel off as much of the label as possible. Spread vegetable oil or Crisco over the sticky residue remaining and let it sit for one more night.  Actually, I only have to let it sit an few hours on this step... then wipe off with paper towel.  You can wash with Dawn to remove the oil.

Voila!  A beautiful whatever-you-want!

DIY Button & String Envelope

 DIY Button & String Envelope

DIY Button & String Envelope

DIY Button & String EnvelopeMaking and receiving good mail – not bills, not ads, no junk, but a hand written letter – is such a pleasure. I've always been smitten with stationery and office supplies, especially if it's vintage. I don't think I'm the only one who gets excited to shop for sticky notes, new pens and gummed labels!

You can make yours any size- just use any envelope size as a template. Or you can use one of these wooden templates or these envelope template Illustrator files. This is the kind of envelope I used (6 x 9"), and lots more free templates here.

DIY Button & String Envelope
You'll need:
Paper or card stock (I used a vintage file folder)
Old envelope (for template)
Pencil/sharpie
Scissors
Ruler
Bone folder
Glue
1" circular punch
Eyelet & eyelet tool set
Craft or regular hammer
Cutting board
11" string (I used unwaxed linen thread)

  1. Carefully open all the seams of an envelope that you'd like to recreate. This is your template. Place it over your own paper and trace the outline with a pencil or sharpie, and then cut out the shape.
  2. Use a ruler and bone folder to score and fold the flaps of the envelope.
  3. Glue the sides and bottom flaps together. Don't use too much glue. Place a scrap piece of paper into the envelope, so you don't accidentally glue the envelope shut.
  4. Punch or cut out your button shapes. They don't have to be circular! Use your eyelet kit and hammer to punch holes in the center of your button shapes over a cutting board. (The eyelet punch will be round, hollow and has a sharp edge.)
  5. Mark the envelope flap in the center where the top button will be. Your template envelope may have this measured for you. Punch a guide hole here with the same eyelet punch. Tie string around an eyelet.
  6. Place one button part over the eyelet tied with string, then place the flap over the button piece. Use the eyelet setting tool and hammer against the straight end of the eyelet. Don't tap the hammer too hard or you'll smash the eyelet too much.
  7. Mark where the second button will be placed about 1 inch from the first button on the flap. Insert a small cutting board or hard surface into the envelope. Punch the eyelet hole. Insert eyelet, then the second button shape, and set the eyelet.
DIY Button & String Envelope

DIY Button & String EnvelopeMy favorite part are the little, vintage details: the gummed label, the screen printed label on the file folder, and of course the button & string closure...

Make someone's day and make them a good mail day package!! Have you ever received a surprise package that made your day?

    Mission Impossible: Ice Cream Truck

Do you remember the old movie Funny Farm?
Do you remember Chevy Chase declaring war against the crazy mailman that threw his mail out the window as he flew by his house??

My daughter and I have declared a similar war with the local ice cream truck.  I've never seen an ice cream truck drive so fast through a neighborhood!  It's like he's afraid of kids or something!

The family has insituted a plan of action that goes into effect upon hearing canned carnival music.

1.) Everyone drops what they are doing. AND I mean everyone!
2.) My daughter is responsible for gathering the money.
3.) All available adults gather at the mailbox, screaming and flailing our arms wildly.

This didn't work.  I even yelled in my most redneck holler and the target kept moving.  The funny part was my neighbor came over after hearing my bellow, and told us that Sonic has half-price milkshakes after 8pm.  My husband just told her I had an ice cream addiction that we'd like to keep quiet.  He also apologized for my outburst.

Today, my daughter and I have tried a new tactic.  Begging.

    Polaroid Pics

What is cooler than a black and white Polaroid photo?????

Not much.  I found an old Polaroid One Step at a flea market for $5!  It seems to work and had an old film cartridge in it.

I've scoured the internet to find film and finally found Polaroid 600 Black and White Single Pack Film!  It's pretty pricey considering the quality of prints but I absolutely LOVE the vintage look!

It would look great in my scrapbooks or clothespinned to a wire strung up across a wall...

    Upcycled Father's Day Gift

Golfers Survival Kit 012If you are looking for a fun gift to make for Father's Day using reycled materials- why not make a clever golfers survival kit using a recycled coffee drink four pack and bottles? I used products from Marvy Uchida and this recycled frappucino case to make a gift for a golfer Dad.

DecoColor Markers are versitle enough to color metal (lids), cardboard (case) and even ceramics and clay. I used black Uchida Decocolor Markers to color the lids of the bottles as well as the inside and the outside of the case.
Golfers Survival Kit 002To cover the outside of the case with the grass themed paper (Die Cuts with a View), I used a black marker to trace the sides of the case on the wrong side of the patterned paper. My case has irregular edges. If you are using a case with straight sides, you can simply measure the sides and use your Uchida Paper Trimming Buddy and straight edge to cut papers to measurements minus 1/4."
Golfers Survival Kit 003Next, cut your pieces out, cutting about 1/4" inside the traced lines. This ensures that your pieces will be slightly smaller than the sides of the case, which makes it a little more durable. To adhere the papers,  Marvy Mini Glue Tape Runner is perfect.
Glue tape runnerGolfers Survival Kit 004To make fun golf ball embellishments, punch 2" circles using the Uchida Clever Lever Super Jumbo Craft Punch, . Next, use an Opaque Stix in Silver to place small dots on the circle, making it resemble a golf ball. Then, use your Pigmented Artist Marker in black to outline the edges of each ball, which you need four of.
Golfers Survival Kit 006Fill the bottles with fun golfer treats such as golf tees, markers, candy or peanuts.
Golfers Survival Kit 005Stamp the names of contents using Marvy''s Black Dyed Based inkpad and small alphabet stamps.
Golfers Survival Kit 007 Use the mini glue tape to adhere the balls to each of the bottles, placing a generous amount of tape on the back of the ball.
    Golfers Survival Kit 008
Golfers Survival Kit 009I decorated the front of the case with the remaining ball and "dad" in foam stickers. For the remaining hole in the case, I decided to use a rolled up golf towel. A rolled up copy of golf digest would be a great idea too.
